Senior Apartment Checklist

Making the last big move isn't easy. It's a task that involves careful planning, time and effort. Whether you are making the move alone or have the help of a loved ones and/or friends, it's so important to keep a checklist handy. Marking things off as you go seems to make the whole process a walk in the park. We recommend you go over the list and plan accordingly. Some of these options might not apply to you but we can't emphasize enough how important it is to be aware of them. We offer a list of questions you should ask yourself before picking the apartment of your choice.

1. Are the grounds well-maintained? Do they have walking trails and/or garden areas?
2. Does the staff welcome you with a warm greeting?
3. Are the demographics appropriate for your loved one? Will they ‘fit in’?
4. Are rooms large and well lit?
5. Do bathrooms have grab bars, handrails and other safety features?
6. Do all apartments have a telephone, cable TV and Internet access?
7. How many residences total are there in the community? What is the occupancy rate?
8. Are the stairs and hallways well lit?
9. Do doors and windows have safety locks?
10. Is the floor plan easy to follow?
11. Can residents come and go at will?
12. As residents’ needs change and progress, can they remain in the same community?
13. Are there programs & care for Alzheimer’s,dementia and other special needs?
14. Do doctors and nurses give regular checkups?
15. Under what circumstances does the facility call the family, or the resident’s doctor?
16. What type of financing is accepted?
17. Does the community accept Medicare?
18. Does the community accept Medicaid?
19. Is there any government or financial aid?
20. What are the entrance fees?What is the monthly rent?
21. What fees are not included in the rent?
22. How much is the security deposit?
23. Are deposits refundable?
24. Is there an organized activities program with aposted daily schedule of events?
25. Does the facility schedule trips or go to other events off premises?
26. Is there a fitness facility and exercise classes?
27. Are religious services held on-site?
28. Is there a fee for housekeeping and laundry?
29. Can residents eat meals in their apartments?
30. Are meals provided only at scheduled times?
